When you are cleaning a watch with a leather band be careful not the get the animal skin strap wet. The water and soap will help deteriorate the glue and stitching. Rubber or gel bands can be cleaned like a regular metal band.
Keep in mind - Automatic watches or Hand Wound watches need to be inspected by a professional watch jeweler at least every five-ten years to make sure the movement is well oiled. If not worn regularly, the watch must be stored properly. see watch storage. Many watch companies carry a five or ten year warranty on their movements so take advantage of it and have your watch inspected at least half way through the term and before it expires.
Quartz watches will run out of battery power usually between two-eight years. Every time the case back is open is one more chance of dust and debris getting in. So when the battery is changed make sure the professional checks the movement. Believe it or not, many professionals just change the battery.
Leather bands will dry up, split apart and rip. No matter who makes this band, it is the nature of leather, glue and stitching. Depending on how much you wear it, the conditions you put it through, the climate you live in and how you store it will determine the life of the band.
